But now that you know God –or rather are known by God- how is it that you are turning back…? – Galatians 4:9 NIV
On the Final Day the entire human race is going to stand before the Lord Jesus to hear what He has to say about them. We’re all going to be separated into 3 groups:
- Those who know Him and are known by Him
- Those who know Him but are not known by Him
- Those who don’t know Him and are not known by Him
What group will you fall? Wait! Before you answer let us expound on them a little.
- Known by Jesus
You see, heaven is meant for Jesus’ friends. He has gone ahead of His friends to prepare a party for them. He is now done planning the party and is eagerly waiting for His friends to join Him. This was why He pleaded with His Father in John 17:24 and said: “I want these whom You have given Me to be with Me where I am”. The party is called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Jesus went back to heaven over 2,000 years ago to prepare and make sure everything is in place. The table has been set, the chairs have been arranged and positions given. Jesus has name tags on all the seats. He is eagerly awaiting His return to earth where He will call His friends to be with Him forever. And who are Jesus’ friends? They are those who have a relationship with Him. When these people see Jesus they will recognize Him and He will recognize them. They will finally see the Lord they had always adored. The God they had always prayed to, and trusted, and spoken to everyday, and imitated. Their spirits will testify with His Spirit that they are children of God. The moment they see Him they will see themselves in Him and He in them. They have not only known Jesus but they are known by Jesus.
- Not Known by Jesus
Ah, the ones not known by Jesus. It is for these ones this entire article was written in the first place. For in every church you go, every corner you turn, these make up a large number of “Christians”.
But who are they?
These set of people are those that never had a relationship with God. They were always in church and they were always serving. They listened to Christian songs, attended Christian concerts, they had Christian friends – but they never developed a relationship with Jesus, they just followed those who did. Like I always say, when Paul says “Imitate me as I imitate Christ” he’s not saying Follow me, I’m the perfect example of Jesus. No, Paul was saying Look at me, I am following Jesus. Join me in following Jesus!
Now let’s look at two bible passages that show us the conversation between Jesus and these ones on the last day:
Please read the passage above.
As you have read, on the Lord’s Day these people will be troubled and unprepared to meet Jesus because they have no oil in their lamps. Now the oil in this context represents a relationship with God as you will see shortly. And so on that day these folks will ask for the impossible, they will beg the saints for some of their relationship with God. But the saints will reply: You cannot have my relationship with Jesus, this is a personal thing. Go get your own! Then these people will go in search of a relationship. In fact, they will return with what they believe is a relationship, a purchased knowledge of God. But the Lord will reject them saying these words: “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, I do not know you [we have no relationship].” – Matthew 25:12 AMP
Please read the passage above.
These ones will throw a barrage of questions Jesus’ way and will demand a reward for their good works. They will say: Lord, we prophesied in Your name. We interceded. We ushered at church. We organized special programs. We sang in the choir. We fed the poor. We were good people! But Jesus will tell them plainly the only criteria for an eternity with Him is His knowledge of a person. “I never knew you!” Jesus will say. “Even when you were doing those things I didn’t know you. You never tried to draw close to Me even though I stood at the door and knocked all your life. You never wanted any form of intimacy with Me. You only served because you thought you could buy eternal life by “helping” Me.
He [Jesus] answered, ‘Do I know you? I don’t think I know you.’ – Matthew 25:12 MSG
People, what Jesus wants is you. He wants you to love Him, commune with Him and develop a relationship with Him. That’s why He created you. He made you in His own image so He can relate with you. Heaven is for Jesus’ friends.
- Don’t Know Jesus and Not Known by Jesus
There’s not much to explain here. These last set of people are those who don’t know the Lord and frankly they don’t care. They have their place with the second set of people, locked out of eternity with Jesus. But it doesn’t have to be that way, with Jesus there is hope of salvation.
The joker here is to seek to know God personally. When you draw near to Him He will draw near to you. If you seek Him you will find Him. Resolve to know Him better by spending more time with Him as you would with any friend. Jesus loves you, please love Him back.
