The Love Gauge

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength – Mark 12:30

How much do you love God? If you were to rate your love for Jesus on a scale of 1-10 what would you rate it? Take a 10 second break to think and pick a number. Now what do you think is the greatest expression of this love? How do you think you can show this big God how much you really love Him? Well, I can help you with that.

Recently the Lord taught me 3 stages we can use to gauge our love for Him. And praise Jesus, being the Word that He is, He showed everything in the scriptures. Now take another 10 second break and clap for Jesus!

Welcome back. Below are the three stages of love [please note this is not exhaustive], from Beginner to Greatest:

  1. Keeping His Commandments

If you love Me, keep My commandments – John 14:15

I believe this is the most basic stage of your love for God. Scripture is replete with showing that love is proved by commandment keeping. It really is the most basic thing ever. What business do we have calling ourselves His children if we cannot keep His commandments? Sadly many Christians today have been tricked into believing that they will always struggle with certain sins as long as they are on earth. But no. God’s children don’t struggle to keep His laws, for He has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness! If you are still struggling with accepting and keeping Jesus’ instructions then you are still at this basest level of love for Him. Brethren, this is a dangerous place to be. We must quickly mature and learn to just do as He says. The truth is, if we really love Him like we claim to, we would be completely obedient to Him. Don’t believe? I’ll prove it to you. Take for example a couple who are madly in love with each other. Suppose the wife absolutely detests it when her husband farts in the living room and always complains when he does it, do you know what is going to happen? The man will sit himself down one day and think to himself: My wife hates this thing and every time I do it she gets mad. What’s more important to me, my fart or my wife? Away with this fart! I love my wife, I’ll do what she likes. Children of God, if you love someone you WILL do what they want. It’s nothing complicated at all! If you love Jesus I promise you, you will do all you can to keep all His commandments.

  1. Loving Him More Than Most

Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou Me more than these?… Feed My lambs – John 21:15

Sometime back in January the Lord asked me this question. Like Peter I answered Yeah, Lord. And as in the bible He said to me Feed My lambs. You see, God showed me that there are actually Christians out there that love Him more than most, more than the average Christian you see every day, more than fellow disciples. Peter felt he loved God that much, I felt that way as well, which was why the Lord spoke those words to Peter, and I. Your proof of loving Jesus more than others is in feeding His sheep. Brethren, are you part of that special group that love Jesus this way? If not don’t you want to be? It’s simple. Love God more than everyone around you. Or better still ask Jesus for this sort of love for Him. This is how people step into leadership in God’s kingdom. It is people that love Jesus the most that He gives the honour of feeding His sheep. Are you a leader in God’s kingdom? You must build your love for Him immensely. Or do you want one of your followers who loves Jesus more to be given this leadership honour instead? Hear the words of Jesus, Do you really love me more than all these guys? Then prove it to Me by feeding them. This is not pride brethren. As your love for Jesus grows, you will get to a point where everywhere you go in the Kingdom you will be made a leader. For your immense love for Jesus will be evident to all and you will be handed the mantle of leadership. This is how the church of Jesus Christ grows, leaders always set a high example in all things [Titus 2:7, 1 Timothy 4:12], thereby causing their followers to grow till they are fully taught and become leaders themselves.

  1. Loving to Death

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends – John 15:13

Brethren, this is the granddaddy of them all. You’ve read it yourself, there is no love greater than giving away your life. The greatest way to show love to Jesus is being ready to die for Him, His gospel and His people. The scriptures are rife with this. [1 John 3:16, John 3:16, Ephesians 5:2, Romans 5:8 etc.]

There’s way more to say about these love gauges but we’re trying to avoid too lengthy a read. The Spirit willing, we will expound on the individual love stages in subsequent posts. Till then, spend time praying to build up your love gauge to level 3. Remember, those that will eventually overcome are those that will not love their lives so much as to shrink from death [Revelation 12:11]. Love you guys.
