Be Not Unwise

Wherefore be not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is – Ephesians 5:17

Wisdom, wisdom. Many seek wisdom daily, many pray for wisdom. A number of scriptures speak of wisdom and how to get it, but the verse above simplifies it perfectly for me. According to God’s word in Ephesians 5:17 wisdom is simply knowing God’s will. Those who know God’s will are wise, those who do not are unwise, or fools. “Do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” – Ephesians 5:17 [NIV].

You see, we will save ourselves a lot of stress and empty prayers if we only knew God’s will for our lives. For example, if God’s will for you is to stay in your lowly job and you quit instead, guess what? You have acted foolishly. In the same way if God’s will is that you get promoted and you let the devil or laziness hinder that, guess what again? You have acted foolishly. “Don’t be fools, then, but try to find out what the Lord wants you to do” – Ephesians 5:17 [GNB]. A story I love to share is one of a woman whom God told she will not have children for the first 7 years of her marriage. This lady, knowing God’s will for her life, lived those 7 years in joy and didn’t bother praying amiss. After the 7 years, she conceived and gave birth in peace. We cannot over-emphasize knowing God’s will. Imagine how torturous those 7 years would have been for her if she didn’t know the will of her Father! Know God’s will, it saves you from stress.

Now the burning question, how do you know God’s will concerning your life? Well the answer is in one of my favourite chapters; 1 Corinthians 2. Everyone knows and quotes 1 Corinthians 2:9 often, but many ignore the subsequent verses. It says: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath entered into the heart of man the things that God has planned to them that love Him”. But the full revelation of that verse is the very next one. Verse 10 says: “But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit”. Those hidden things that the world has not seen, nor heard, nor conceived, the Holy Spirit is ready to reveal them to you. It is always God’s pleasure that you come to the knowledge of truth.

Now just as nobody will go about revealing their deep secrets to someone they’re not close to, likewise, the Holy Spirit of Jesus only reveals the deep things of God [v. 10] to His friends [John 15:15]. Saints, it’s not complicated at all, spend time with God, try to develop a relationship and commune with Him, and He will joyfully open up His mind to yours, for His mind is already yours. Remember, we have the mind of Christ [v. 16].

Haven’t you noticed? God is always so eager to tell His children what is on His mind. Remember Genesis 18:17 when God on His way to judge Sodom & Gomorrah? He stopped and asked Himself: “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?”  Scriptures also declare it in Amos 3:7 that: “The Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secrets to His servants…”  In fact, not only is God willing to tell you His will for your life, but also His will concerning others.

However just like in our world today where no one really cares what the next person is going through, so also do we treat God. Not a lot of people really care to know what He thinks and feels. All they want is to be heard. Do you not want to join the exclusive league of people that know the very mind of God? I encourage you dear friend, spend time with God! Listen to Him, ask Him stuff, don’t always be in a hurry, and see if He doesn’t pour out His heart to you. Remember, you’re only an intimate time with the Spirit away from knowing the mind of Jesus.

Even though we cannot totally figure God out and predict all His moves, there are some things He wants us to know. Verse 11 of this same chapter prays “That we know the things that are freely given to us of God. Some things are not for you to know [Acts 1:7], while some things may be freely known. Pray to know what He will have you know, and you will know.

You’re out there, you know God’s will, but you’re struggling with it. Don’t be ashamed, even Jesus felt the same. Join me to pray in His words: “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done” – Matthew 26:42.

Don’t live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants – Ephesians 5:17 [MSG]
